While people with conditions like arthritis, MS and obesity may have trouble doing traditional yoga, the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa in California offers a unique type of yoga that is suited for all types of individuals, including most who are just beginning to get active after illness or injury: Water Yoga. During Water Yoga, the buoyancy and hydrostatic pressure of the property’s geothermal waters help to support the body in all directions, including standing poses, which helps lead to enhanced strength, stability and agility over time, both in and out of the water. Dates and times vary so check their schedule.

For those who can’t bare the thought of leaving their furry friends home when they go on vacation, the W Scottsdale in Scottsdale, Arizona — a very pet-friendly hotel — features a PAW (Pets Are Welcome) program that includes yappy hours, doggie amenities and even dog-friendly yoga. Also known as Doga, the class takes guests and their dogs through a guided meditation, massage and yoga session on the hotel’s rooftop WET pool deck, helping pet owners bond with their pups while also increasing flexibility and easing body tension. Keep in mind the class is only held once per month, so contact the hotel before you book to inquire when it is.

One of the latest fads in quirky yoga offerings is stand up paddle board yoga. Stand up paddle boarding requires you to balance yourself on a paddle board while standing up, which works your core. While simply standing and paddling is a challenge, certain instructors around the world are adding to the workout by having students perform yoga poses on the boards, working their core, strength and agility. A few places one can partake in this challenging yoga experience include The Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii (daily at 7am); Marriott Aruba (Fridays and Saturdays at 4pm); and Lake Lanier Islands Resort near Atlanta (Fridays at 7pm for sunset and Saturdays at 10am).

Spinning Yoga

Spinning Yoga is a fusion workout that combines the intense calorie burning of spin biking with the balance, strength and flexibility benefits of yoga. After cycling your heart out, you’ll pull out your mat for some time spent in downward dog and mountain pose. Some places to try this unique style of yoga include The BodyHoliday in Saint Lucia; The Spinning Yogi Studio in Lakewood, Colorado; Crunch Gym in New York City.

Kayaking Yoga

Love the outdoors? Kayaking Yoga or KaYoga offers the chance to combine both into one experience. St. Petersburg, Florida, is one place spearheading the trend, as local yoga and fitness expert Tim Ganley — who is also the inventor of KaYoga — leads guests in 45 minutes of kayaking to a deserted island, which is where an hour-long yoga class takes place before kayaking back to the starting point. Another destination where Kayaking Yoga is popular is Sea Island in Georgia, with hour-long classes taking place Wednesdays at 9am. And for a multi-day Yoga Kayaking experience, head to Baja California in Mexico for a Baja Sea of Cortez Islands Yoga Adventure & Kayak Tour, where you can do 4-6 days of yoga kayaking while also seeing wildlife like dolphins, whales, sea lions and birds. Kayaking Yoga is also offered through The Northwest Passage in Belize, with guests awaking each morning of the 5 day, 4 night retreat in the sleepy fishing village of Placenia for some yoga followed by kayaking rivers and snorkeling coral reefs before finishing the day with meditative yoga.

Laughing Yoga

Sun Island Resorts in Shanghai is one place where you can partake in this unique yoga experience, as is CasaMagna Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa in Mexico.
