1. Wadi Rum, Jordan

At 280 square miles (720 square kilometers), Wadi Rum is Jordan’s largest wadi. If the valley’s immense size doesn’t impress you, its scenery certainly will. Otherworldly sandstone and granite formations rise from the dessert floor, reaching toward the sky with their different colors and shapes. As you float away in your hot air balloon the glowing reds and jagged peaks become smaller, as do the Bedouin goat-hair tents that dot the desert. You can book a hot air balloon ride with the Royal Aero Sports Club for 130 Jordanian Dinars (about $183 USD) by emailing info@rascj.com.

2. Cappadocia, Turkey

Hot air ballooning over Cappadocia will make you feel like you’re flying in outer space. Due to the area’s excellent flying conditions, you’ll gently drift over bizarre fairy chimneys, carved cave villages, beautiful vineyards and orchards, sparkling ravines, inspiring valleys and vibrant colors glowing in rainbow shades. Surreal is the best adjective to describe the ride, as the landscape is unlike any other in the world. Hot Air Ballooning Cappadocia is great company to have this experience with, and along with the flight you’ll get hotel transfers, tea, coffee, snacks, insurance and a commemorative flight certificate. A standard tour is about 130 Euros ($167 USD).

While always a worthwhile experience, hot air ballooning over the Maasai Mara between July and October allows you witness a true natural phenomenon: The Great Migration. During this time each year zebras, gazelles and wildebeests move from the Serengeti to the Maasai Mara to graze. Witnessing this at all is a truly amazing experience; however, watching it from above is life changing. If you visit outside of July thought October you’ll still see plenty of wildlife, like hyenas, hippos, crocodiles, lions, cheetahs, giraffes, elephants, antelope and ostrich, as well as the elusive black rhino, which is much easier to spot in a hot air balloon than on the ground. There are a number of companies that offer hot air balloon adventures over the Maasai Mara, some of which include Govenor’s Camp Collection, Hot Air Safaris and Skyship Company.

4. Lake Geneva Region, Switzerland

There’s a reason the annual International Balloon Festival takes place here — specifically in Chateau d’Oex — every January. There aren’t many things that can compare to seeing the colorful balloons against the backdrop of snow-capped peaked. Balloon-goers will be able to soar high over the dramatically white and jagged mountain tops of the Swiss Alps, experiencing them from a vantage point not many get to. And in true European fashion, the hot air balloon experience ends with a celebratory glass of wine. Moreover, once your ride is complete you can learn about hot air balloon history and culture through the exhibits at the nearby Espace Ballon. Chateau d’Oex Balloon is one company that offers the experience, and can help make it a memorable one.

5. The Outback, Australia

Looking down from the sky you’ll see nothing but a few bush paths, rock caves, waterholes, sparkling springs and natural landmarks like Ayers Rock and Mount Olga. Moreover, because it’s an early morning flight you’ll see the sunrise slowly illuminate the landscape as you gently drift up into the clouds. You can enjoy a hot air balloon ride over The Outback with Outback Ballooning, with Alice Springs Early Morning Flights starting at $290 AUD (about $263 USD) for a 30-minute flight including insurance, Champagne and refreshments.
